Electronic Science and Technology is the frontier of information science and technology. It is committed to researching the operation and interaction characteristic in different mediums of electron and photon based on modern physics and mathematics, inventing and researching variety of electronic materials and components, optoelectronic materials and devices, integrated circuits and integrated electronic systems with computer and information processing technology. Electronic information industry is playing a strategic, fundamental, guiding role in national economy, and it provides technical support and material basis for the industrial upgrading and transformation, economic development and social information. It is also an important cornerstone of national defense and information security. In the 1990s, the development and popularization of microcomputers, communications, household appliances and other information industry caused a substantial increase in demand for integrated circuit chips. In addition, the concept of high-tech warfare of electronic and information had been widely accepted due to local wars. Microelectronics technology has obtained the unprecedented attention. In the 21st century, electronic science and technology has grown rapidly, it has been widely used in the field of information, energy, materials, aerospace, life sciences, environment, military science, etc. The related industries have been booming and a large number of high-quality professionals of electronic science and technology are in urgent need.
In order to broaden the specialty field and gear to international standards, the Ministry of Education issued a new undergraduate course catalog and guiding specialty directories in April 1998. It integrated original undergraduate specialty such as microelectronics technology, optoelectronic technology, physical electronics technology, electronic materials and components, electromagnetic field and microwave, as a first level discipline, named "Electronic Science and Technology". The Teaching Guidance Committee of Electronic Science and Technology in Ministry of Education issued "Undergraduate guidance specialty norms in Electronic Science and Technology of University" in 2012, which designated five specialty directions of Electronic Science and Technology: microelectronics technology, optoelectronics technology, electronic materials and components, physical electronic technology, electromagnetic field and microwave. It can be seen that the range of subjects covered by Electronic Science and Technology is very broad, and most of them are interdisciplinary. The College of Optoelectronic Engineering of Chongqing University applied for opening the specialty in 2001 and was approved by the Ministry of Education, then began to recruit the first session of Electronic Science and Technology undergraduate students and have been enrolled and trained 13 sessions students so far. The specialty carried out the development of high-level specialists in Electronic Science and technology, relying on the strong academic advantage of Chongqing University. It includes the Key Laboratory of National Defense of new micro-nano devices and systems, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Technology and System technology research base, combining with the needs of national electronic information industry development and basic conditions of Microelectronics industry development in Chongqing area. The specialty in the college of Optoelectronic Engineering has rich resources of the teaching staff, and possesses powerful strength to develop various talents from bachelor degree to doctor degree in the discipline. It has trained a large number of inter-discipline, high-level and innovative talents who can be engaged in research, design, manufacture and the research and development of new products, new technologies, new technics in the field of integrated circuit design and manufacturing, electronic and optoelectronic devices and materials, micro-nano devices and systems.
